So many times we hear that brainwashing is a bad thing but when done properly, it can be effective in renewing the mind.
Brainwashing – A Good Thing?
When I was a kid the word brainwashing was an ugly word and it was mostly associated with something negative like cults which is understandable when you think about it. I believe this did some damage to people like myself who weren’t raised in a Christian home. I thought that all the denominations of Christianity were weird like that because I didn’t know better so any time I would hear the word brainwashing, my ears would perk up and I would be on guard. Now the word isn’t so dirty to me. I think people could use a good brainwashing starting with the music they listen to.
From the time I was a kid until my mid-to-late twenties, I would listen to any kind of negative rebellious music. I was ignorant of the fact that music is a gift and should be treated as such. I just kept riding the wave of rebelliousness and negativity. The worst part about being deceived is that you don’t even know when it’s happening. During this long period of time in my life, the bad music choices would begin to saturate my mind and impacted how I lived and treated people.
Around the time my mother died, I was listening to some really dark stuff where depression is concerned. I was listening to songs with lyrics that had a negative bent to them. It really was a perfect storm. The ambiance that I created tainted my mind. Repetitive words seared my conscious and subconscious mind. I had been brainwashed and the results weren’t good. I ended up being hospitalized for a manic depressive episode. I realize this wasn’t the whole reason I was hospitalized, but it had a part to play.
Brainwashing – Renewing the Mind
And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away. 1 Samuel 16:23
The Power of Music for Renewing the Mind
So if bad music can do damage then good music can bring healing, right? As you can see The Bible verse that I quoted supports the point I’m trying to make. Plus I can assure you that in my own life I’ve had physical and mental health breakthroughs while listening to music that promotes healing. The healer will meet you through words. This is the truth that penetrates the soul. Christian or non-Christian, if you are suffering start the process of washing your soul with verses of light and life. Try listening to something like “It Is Well” by Kristene DiMarco & Bethel Music. Give a listen to this song “Here’s My Heart” by Lauren Daigle.
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Romans 10:17
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1
And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. Hebrew 11:6
Win the Battle
Whether you’ve been sick for a long time or you find yourself battling something new. Wash in the truth of what God says about you. Stir your heart to remember God’s faithfulness, focus on how He has come through for you each time. Bring it to the forefront of your mind. When we are thankful to God and bring our thoughts in remembrance of Him, it can paralyze fear, doubt, and unbelief. If faith comes by hearing, then keep listening. If faith is the substance of things hoped for, then keep hoping.
I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart. I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours. Mark 11:23-24
I also recommend that you go on YouTube and search for “Misty Edwards soaking worship” and “Laura Hackett soaking worship”. This has helped me bring about an acceleration of peace and healing in my own life. I’m not saying that music is the answer to everything. If you’re sick, by all means, work with doctors and medicine to help you get well. I’m simply suggesting that you not neglect your spiritual life to help you on your healing journey. I pray that this blessed you in some way.
